Backup Gear is Vital.

February 28th, 2011

Everyone who has ever requested a wedding or commercial quote from me knows that one of the first things I harp on is a line charge for backup equipment rental. And I say that that’s important regardless of which photographer they choose. Some people wonder why I have 3 lenses that cover common portrait lengths.

Here’s why: My personal story for the weekend.

As most readers know I’ve been spending the bulk of my time working with my wife’s yarn shop Sheep’s Clothing. I’ve been moving my focus back to photography the past few months and have been doing pretty much exclusively in-studio portraits. With nothing that can’t be rescheduled I loaned out a spare camera and lens set to a friend’s (another photographer) daughter who doesn’t live close.

Long story short I’ve been shooting the past few months with only a single camera in the studio with the option of having another one show up overnight FedEx from one of the various rental houses or, if necessary a new one from one of the major shops. This is a great scenario if, say, the camera gave out Monday – Thursday. I say gave out because while I’ve lost strobes, lenses, radios, etc from dropping I’ve never lost a camera that way. Never until Friday night.

Thursday night, after an exhausting shoot,  I knocked the camera, 24-70 f/2.8 lens, and pocket wizard FlexTT5 off of a stool that I should never have left it on. 6-7lb dropping 36″ to hit a hard floor did bad things… but other than the sheared off FlexTT5 everything seemed to be working. I didn’t test a Plus II at that time, though. Saturday morning… not so much. Camera wouldn’t power on and even after diagnosing and fixing that problem a Plus II on the camera wouldn’t fire.

My shoot on Saturday went off wired to the lights and with the camera literally taped up (with white gaffer’s tape since I couldn’t find the black) and went well. Thank you to everyone who offered to loan me a camera for Sunday. The camera won’t fire a PW Plus II anymore that I was planning to use on Saturday but it will fire the FlexTT5 and MiniTT1 and with some work I got it to accept batteries Saturday night so Sunday went off without a hitch (and without tape!). There are some advantages to my past career and electronics hobby.

In the end replacement parts are winging their way to me as I type this but the moral stands. If you are ever on a shoot that will be expensive or impossible to reschedule (weddings come to mind) carry backup equipment for everything. And from now on even during light times in the studio I’ll always have a backup camera.

Site Refresh In the Pipe

February 20th, 2011

Some people have heard me lament my search for an iPad capable portfolio software since we now use the iPad extensively. I won’t bore you with the number of solutions I’ve looked into or tried the past few months. Those that have worked with me before you know that I both back up and deliver images via PhotoShelter. It’s a fantastic service that I always recommend to both other professional photographers and prolific amateurs.

Rejoice for PhotoShelter now offers a non-flash (ie iPad capable) portfolio system. I’m in the process of finalizing the new site and, as I always do, it will come with a graphical refresh and will include a new navigation system. I’ll be rolling it out in about 2 weeks with the new photo packages that will go into effect in April.

To check out the site in the mean time visit hyak.photoshelter.com. Please be aware that it is not complete either from a photo or text standpoint.

Queued up blog posts about recent photo shoots will continue to be queued up until the new site is live.

Shibui Fashion Show

January 27th, 2011

This Saturday (Tomorrow) Sheep’s Clothing and Hyak Photography are putting together a small fashion show featuring garments from Shibui Knits.

Show will be at 1pm at Sheep’s Clothing in Kennewick, next to Costco.

We’ll also be shooting a lot of promotional material.

Planning for this event is why things have been quiet the past month or two. Hope to see you all there, though.

Free Studio Saturdays

January 2nd, 2011

Welcome to 2011!

To call the last few months exciting, busy, interesting or all three would be an understatement.

Prior to the entire “My wife bought a yarn shop!” I made a post that I was going to be starting “Free Studio Saturdays” and I’m writing this post to see how many quotation marks I can use.

Two Saturdays a month we’ll be offering 30 minute sessions without charge. You will need to call, e-mail, or use the contact button above ahead of time to book a slot. There will be no set start and stop time on Saturday.

The goal is to make it possible to do a month by month series of kids growing up (and more new packages this year will include that), update profile pics for social networking, grab a shot with a couple of friends who are in town, etc. This will also be the time, if you are a Sheep’s Clothing customer to get your photo with your project for the contest they’ll be running.

Like every Hyak Photography photo session these include the online viewing gallery where you can grab images pre-sized for e-mail, use convenient share buttons, show slide shows, setup lightboxes, order prints, etc.

We’ll be shooting for every 2nd and 4th Saturday so the next dates are January 8 and 22 and February 12 and 26th. March 12th I’m unavailable so it’ll skip to March 26th. April is tentatively the 9th and 23rd.

Let me know if you have any questions, comments, ideas, etc.

2011 Veterans Photo Sessions

November 5th, 2010

Hyak Photography always offers veterans discounts. But we’re going a step further this year and simply removing the cost completely. We’ll do as many as we can and space is available first come first serve.

The only stipulation is that the photo session needs to be either of a veteran or for a veteran, be shot in the studio and fit in the 1 hour session. Sessions need to be booked in advance and take place in the remainder of this year. (Mothers of veterans count, Pamela).

Some ideas I thought up, just for ideas, not for limitations: family portrait (obviously), updated photos of the kids, new photos of yourself to send to someone deployed, a sexy book to give him when he comes home, maternity photos, photos of a deceased veteran’s flag or medals, or simply a bunch of people dancing around in the strobe lights.

Please remember our veterans, past and present, both on veterans day and the rest of the year.

New Product: Trading Cards

September 19th, 2010

Trading cards are targeted at high school seniors but with a change of image and editable text they can really be used for almost anything where you might want to hand out gifts.

Why not get them from an engagement session to include with your invitations or save the date cards?

Hyak Photography and Sheep’s Clothing are having an Open House/Grand Re-Opening this weekend. Sept 10-12, 2010.

Creative LIVE: Jasmine Star

August 25th, 2010

With all of the remodel at Sheep’s Clothing and setting up the new studio, getting new samples printed, etc… I’ve been a bit out of the loop. I’ve seen a lot of tweets about the Star Wedding and had no idea what any of them were about and Seattle seemed far away with the hectic schedule we’ve had.

Yesterday, though I caught Chase Jarvis’ interview with Jasmine Star and understood what all the fuss was about. Jasmine Star is a top wedding photographer from southern California doing a 5 day online seminar. You can check it out at http://creativelive.com/live/ if you have the time it’s available free in real-time. Alas that I won’t have time to view all of it as it happens, but there will be a download for $99/$149.

I’ve had mixed-feelings about the content on Creative LIVE from my own perspective, but think it’s a great service.

Open House: September 10-12, 2010

August 24th, 2010

We’re having the Official Grand Opening  Friday, September 10th with ribbon cutting and all. The open house will run the whole weekend. There will be cake and prizes.

Stop in, say hi, find out about our new offerings.

Studio Open

July 27th, 2010

Hyak Photography’s new studio, co-located with Sheep’s Clothing (owned by my wife for the past 7 weeks) is located at 8551 W Gage Blvd in Kennewick. We’ve both put a lot into Sheep’s Clothing and into the new studio space and we’re not quite done in the shop, so studio bookings are available starting in mid-September. Call 509-205-1673 or use the contact form to schedule your session.

This also heralds a change of assistants. My wife, Marcia, is no longer able to assist with most of my shoots because of her new venture. On your next session you can probably welcome Kris who has worked with other photographers in the area, kept Marcia’s sanity intact at our wedding, and has been on the other side of my lens before.
